What you should know - the difference between Marketing and Selling?

bullet Marketing is the ability to generate leads while Selling is your ability to convert those leads into clients.

Marketing refers to promotion and can also involve pricing, product placement and distribution. Promotion can be to a specific target group, or it can be aimed at the general public. Although marketing is often used with the word advertising, marketing can be more specifically described as the plan by which the advertising and promotions will be carried out, as in a marketing strategy. Marketing is not selling!

Getting an unknown brand name, product or service into a viable recognition state and revenue generating position requires robust marketing. Online advertisements placed on key high-traffic websites or search engines such as Google might be one option, while advertising in radio, newspapers and magazines might be another or a combination of all. One of the most expensive marketing strategies includes well-placed billboard ads coupled with television commercials.

Marketing is unlimited by creativity and can go beyond conventional means. For example- If the desired target market fills the inner city, an advertisement on a bus line or Radio ads might be a cost-effective means of marketing.

Regardless of product or service, the marketing objective is to reach the intended audience with a message and delivery system that reflects the product or service itself -– or at least does not detract from it. For example, an upscale department store located on the Mink Mile (that's the Bay &  Bloor area in Toronto) would waste advertising dollars placing ads on a bus line. Hiring an marketing agency to put together a full-page ad for a magazine like Toronto Life or a newspaper such as National Post or Globe & Mail  is a more likely marketing strategy. Conversely, a legal firm dealing in employment law will not likely divert money into a costly magazine ad that caters to a market outside the main target audience. Transit ads, local newspapers, local job news/magazines and online advertisements will be a more likely marketing choice.

Aside from attainment, or expanding the customer base or brand awareness, marketing is also concerned with customer retention  management (CRM). This refers to marketing that keeps current clients / customers coming back or doing word of mouth advertising to their family & friends. By providing special discounts and special offers, along with promotional events and great customer service, the CRM plan allows for retention of the customer base and opportunities to up sell.
